Since the announcement of Episode VII, the internet has been abuzz with rumours and speculation. What will the new films be about? Which characters will make their comeback? And perhaps most importantly, who will play them? Frank Oz recently revealed that he'd be willing to reprise the role of Yoda and now Ewan McGregor, who starred as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy, has announced that he'd be willing to make a comeback as the fallen Jedi Master. While answering fan questions on twitter earlier this week, McGregor revealed that he would be keen to return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
"Yes, I would definitely be up for it. I'd rather I'd play Obi-Wan Kenobi if they needed me rather than someone else."
With a statement like this, there's no doubt that Ewan McGregor would happily return to the galaxy far, far away… and the news doesn't end there.
In an interview with MTV, he revealed that if there was to be an Obi-Wan spin-off, he'd definitely be "up for it". "I think it's a good idea," he said - referring to an Obi-Wan movie. "The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, 'Episode III,' before Alec Guinness, there's that period where he's in the desert." McGregor is of course talking of bridging the gap between the two trilogies, when Obi-Wan watched over Luke as he grew up on Tatooine. "That might be my window, there, to tell that story," McGregor said. "I don't know what he did in the desert. We could make up some stuff."
So will we see McGregor again in Episode VII as a Jedi ghost, reminiscent of the scenes in Return of the Jedi? Or could he make a spectacular return in his very own spin-off movie? Most importantly, should McGregor really return to the role at all?
The force is strong in this one
Personally, I rather liked McGregor's interpretation of the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't too fussed on the prequel trilogy, but I was rather impressed with his acting throughout. He tackled the role with a certain subtlety and sensitivity befitting a Jedi Master and he certainly didn't look out of place wearing the iconic Jedi robes. But perhaps the real question shouldn't be whether Ewan McGregor should return - but should Obi-Wan?
If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine
Despite McGregor's enthusiasm for the role, there's been no indication that Obi-Wan will return… but the possibility is certainly an interesting one. For one thing, Obi-Wan Kenobi is very much deceased by the end of Return of the Jedi… If he is to return for Episode VII, will it be in a flashback or yet-another ethereal vision sequence?
Personally, I'd love to see more of Obi-Wan, but I can't help feeling it would be more suited to one of the (now many) rumoured spin-off movies. I'd love nothing more than to watch Ewan McGregor pick up his lightsaber and fight alongside our favourite little green man as they battle the forces of the dark side. But to sit through another ghostly vision where he doles out some ethereal advice?
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi… you're my only hope.
Do you think Ewan McGregor should return as Obi-Wan? Should he get his own spin-off movie?
