Set in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a tale about a Portuguese widow, whose teenage daughter persuades her to date a rich, British, fishing industry businessman, who has recently moved to town. The widow falls for the newcomer, who pretends to be an ambitious businessman, but is actually a professional gambler.
