DVD Review

Capt Jack Sparrow and the crew find themselves up against so-called 'Dead Man' and Captain of the Flying Dutchman - Davy Jones (an unrecognisable Bill Nighy in a prosthetic seafood heaven) for this lavish follow-up to Disney's sea fairing adventure.

He proves to be much more than an old sea fairing legend when he arrives from the bottom of the sea bed to claim a 13-year-old blood debt from Jack, who faces eternal damnation and servitude. Cue a frantic, action-packed rush to locate Jones's curse-breaking chest that houses his still-beating heart. In turn, lovers Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) find themselves facing the gallows for helping Sparrow in the last outing, that is unless they can retrieve the notorious pirate's unique compass that will lead a corrupt English naval officer to the very same chest.

It's all about spectacular set pieces. Depp's bumbling, comical escape from an island of cannibals alongside various scrapes with ship-crushing sea monster, the Cracken, that will have you gasping for breath.

Probably a tad too intense for little-uns (it is a 12), punters should also be aware that this is very much the first chapter of two movies, so don't go expecting a satisfying conclusion. Like The Empire Strikes Back or Back To The Future 2, Dead Man's Chest sets us up rather nicely for the third installment.

This two disc set features a barrel full of bonus material including bloopers, a number of featurettes including According to Plan: The Harrowing and True Story of Dead Man's Chest, Captain Jack: From Head To Toe and Meet Davy Jones: Anatomy Of A Legend. Then there's footage from the premiere and Jerry Bruckheimer: A Producer's Photo Diary to boot. Hearty viewing for all!
