The furore provoked by Mel Gibson's epic portrayal of the last 12 hours of Christ's life earlier this year was wholly understandable: religion isn't exactly a splinter-inducing, sit-on-the-fence, topic.
Starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, Gibson's film charts the events of that fateful day in Jerusalem. From Jesus's betrayal and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane to his eventual death on the cross at Golgotha, it's harrowing viewing no matter how great or small your emotional attachment .
All the cast give sterling performances and cope with the challenges of the languages they have to use admirably - the movie was shot entirely in Latin and Aramaic. Complementing the intended grandeur cinematographer Caleb Deschanel drenches the film in brooding shades, giving it a truly epic feel.
Gibson does not flinch when it to comes to graphically showing the violence unleashed upon Christ. Some have described it as gratuitous but Gibson always maintained that he would show Jesus's suffering as realistically as possible.
It might not chime with the personal beliefs of all, but anyone with a religious bent should find themselves profoundly moved.
