Director Chris Wedge followed 2002's Ice Age with another visually spectacular creation. Robots is such a bombardment of intricately constructed visuals, it feels like the animation team overdosed on sugar before embarking on what surely was a labour of love. It seems perfect then, with all its mayhem, that Robin Williams should provide the voice of one of the main Robots, Fender.
Ewan McGregor voices automaton Rodney Copperbottom whose dream is to work as an inventor and his role model is Bigweld (Mel Brooks) who's always on the look out for new talent. Rodney leaves his hometown for Robot City but has to overcome many barriers if he is to reach his goal. Rodney and his new found city gang - Fender, Crank Casey (Drew Carey), Lug (Harland Williams) and the mute Diesel - attempt to take on the greedy rulers of the big city corporation even convincing employee Cappy (Halle Berry) to rebel and join them.
Despite the array of acting talent, the characters here don't really take centre stage when you have action as spectacular as this and plenty of visual as well as spoken gags, which will no doubt be enjoyed with repeat big screen and DVD viewings.
There's also optional commentary by director Chris Wedge, deleted Scenes, animation bloopers and audio outtakes, interactive set top games, Robots music videos, an animated short called Aunt Fan, Ice Age 2 Scrat Teaser Trailer and Behind The Scenes Look At Ice Age 2.
