This is the film that was supposed to relaunch Kevin Costner as a box office star but Jennifer Aniston rather stole his thunder when the world learned of her troubles with then hubby Brad Pitt.
True to Aniston's cinematic form it's another rom-com but with a potentially ingenious twist. Jen plays Sarah Huttinger, a young woman uncertain about her future with boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo). She returns home feeling lost but only to discover, thanks to her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine), that her very own mum may have been the inspiration for Mrs. Robinson in the celebrated play and movie, The Graduate (yes, the one with Dustin Hoffman). In fact Sarah may have been the result of her mother's extra marital relationship with a toyboy! So trying to piece the story together Sarah goes in search of the man in question played by Kevin Costner, but will history repeat itself?
When Harry Met Sally and Spinal Tap director Rob Reiner embellishes the clever post-modern (ish) premise with sitcom-light humour. Aniston provides trademark kooky nuisances and Kostner isn't bad. The excellent MacLaine's on screen for all of 13 minutes but she still steals the show.
