Robert Pattinson makes first appearance since Stewart split

Actor is quizzed on the Daily Show by Jon Stewart but remains good-humouredly tight-lipped

Robert Pattinson elected to keep quiet over his split with 'Twilight' co-star Kristen Stewart while appearing on US talk show 'The Daily Show'.

But R-Patz did say that he was going to 'hire a publicist' following the furore around her affair with director Rupert Sanders.

Host Jon Stewart began the interview, Pattinson's first since the news broke and arranged for him to promote new David Cronenberg film 'Cosmopolis', by faux-casually asking: “So, what have you been up to?”

He then produced two tubs of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, quipping: “We're just a couple of gals talking. Tell me everything.”

“This is the weird things about these interviews, and now I'm going to sound like an idiot, but my biggest problem in my life is that I'm cheap,” said Pattinson, eventually skirting the subject.

“I didn't hire a publicist and every awkward interview, most actors have things scripted. I'm going to hire a publicist.”

After then showing footage of Pattinson being stalked outside the studio by paparazzi, he joked: “I think you're confused about this show and what the real issues in America are. Tonight, it really is the Twilight show.”

Eventually giving Pattinson a break, and ending the interview, Stewart said: “My wish for you is that you get to handle your business and personal life in private. I wish you all the best.”

'Cosmopolis', which is already out in the UK but released in the US later this week, sees Pattinson star as a billionaire banker alongside Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton and Juliette Binoche.
