DVD Review

Scary Movie 3 introduced veteran spoof comedy movie star Leslie Neilson to the franchise and, also due also to direction from David Zucker (Airplane, Naked Gun), was an improvement on the considerably less funny first two Scary Movie films.

That film featured aliens and this time round there's a fully fledged alien invasion. Dimwitted Cindy [Anna Faris] and her sex mad, self-serving pal Brenda [Regina Hall], reunite and try to find clues to save the planet from the ruthless alien Tri-pods.

The Rosemary and Thyme of the alien bashing world are joined by a male bimbo, Tom [Craig Bierko], who plays cute and clueless like he was fashioned from clay. There's some flimsy plotlessness involving a haunted house, a dead little boy, people falling over in a comedy manner, everyone screams at least twice etc.

Lots of good films are poured into the blender to make this mush, which is at best mildly amusing: The Village, The Grudge, Saw, Million Dollar Baby and War of the Worlds all feature. There's celebrity cameos aplenty from Carmen Electra, Shaquille O' Neal, Lil' John, and Bill Pullman while Neilson returns, attempting to save the day in more ways than one.

Some might find the special features here more entertaining than the film as they offer insight into the mind of David Zucker. There's commentary by him alongside producer Robert Weiss and writer Craig Mazin (writer? We thought they made it up as they went along!) plus: The Man Behind the Laugh (Zucker), Zany, spoof humour - Zucker style (yep, they actually use the word 'zany')deleted and extended scenes, bloopers (naturally), An Interviewer's Worst Nightmare, The Visual Effects Of Scary Movie 4, The Youngbloodz, Rappers...Actors and NBA/Scary Movie 4 Spot.
