This touching and funny collection of episodes is a lovely, heartwarming escape onto the beauty of Hampstead Heath to sneak a peak at the intimacies of some very idiosyncratic relationships - whether old or young, established, ending or just taking their first tremulous steps out onto a journey of love.
It’s littered with a bounty of British talent: Ewan McGregor's sexually active gay extrovert, Adrian Lester and Catherine Tate conducting an incredulously cordial divorce; And experienced stage thesps Benjamin Whitrow and Eileen Adkins rediscovering their past loves. Then there’s Gina McKee and Hugh Bonneville quickly discovering the dangers of blind dating and Oscar-nominee Sophie Okonedo getting in a tangle with an extremely funny Tom Hardy, plus Mark Strong, Polly Walker and Andrew Lincoln dipping in for brief appearances.
It’s witty, amusing and laugh out loud. This is modern British humour in the classiest classic sense: Observational and literary comedy slips perfectly into place alongside the more ironic and almost slapstick. The cast’s evidently having a ball with great script and unfussy directing. It’s the sort of thing you won’t want it to end, and when it does you’ll want to watch it again. And do! As you’ll spot lots of little things you missed first time around. Plus Hampstead Heath looks superb (You’ll want to go and find all the locations!).
Extras include a commentary from the director and writer, trailer, a fascinating Making Of plus the Bafta Nominated short ‘The Last Post which is predictable (perhaps), but illustrates the director’s skill is no fluke of casting.
Brit film at it’s very, very best. Enjoy.
