Sex Drive focuses on the high jinks of a group of teenagers as they head out on one of those road trips that seemingly happens only in US teen movies. With his two best friends in tow, Ian (Josh Zuckerman) heads out to Knoxville in a bid to lose his virginity to a stunning girl called Ms Tasty that he met on the Internet. But while aiming for a mix of The Sure Thing and American Pie, Sean Anders’ crude comedy is very much the later instead of the former. If there is a gross out gag to be mined he finds it – and, despite a very willing cast, it soon gets tiresome. A shame really as Ander’s film does have many things to recommend, the direction had a playful edge at times, while Seth Green has a welcome extended cameo as a sarcastic Amish farmer. Zuckerman has the Jason Biggs style of embarrassment humour down pat, and Clarke Duke and Amanda Crew as his two best friends display a nice easy going chemistry. But it’s James Marsden as Ian’s bullying brother that is the film’s highlight. He may be best know for heroic roles in X-Men but this, Enchanted and Hairspray show that Marsden is carving a nice niche for himself in pompous comedic roles. The DVD also comes with a crazy and anarchic Ruder, Cruder, Extended version, which is definitely for fans only as it throws in rough footage, outtakes and gratuitous nudity at any given moment. Other extras include a commentary by Sean Anders and co-writer John Morris which is more measured and thoughtful than you would presume and several short featurettes.
