Shadrach 1998

A man looks back to his boyhood in 1935 Virginia where he came of age in matters of life and death thanks to a 99-year-old ex-slave named Shadrach. As an only child from a respectable middle class family, ten-year-old Paul Whitehurst escapes as often as he can to the ramshackle home of Vernon and Trixie Dabney and their seven children. Paul is irresistibly attracted to this impoverished family, descendants of plantation wealth now deep into the hard times of the Great Depression.
