This Japanese outing from 1996 was such a huge hit in it's native land that Hollywood execs have given it a Tinseltown update with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez in the lead roles. Now here's the perfect chance to enjoy Masayuki Suo's original movie.
Shohei Sugiyama (Koji Yakusyo) has long been unhappy with his lot in life. A highly pressurised society has left this 42-year-old feeling empty and a dark depression is starting to settle over him. That is until Shohei spies an attractive woman through a window while riding the train home and, deciding to take a risk, goes to find out who she is. This decision is to have a profound effect on Shohei's life though as he's soon enrolled for dance lessons. Could this be just the tonic he needs to put a smile back on Shohei's face?
Well shot and full of easy charm, Shall We Dance is a wonderful example of laid-back and relaxed filmmaking and if it's half as good as the Gere / Lopez remake you're in for a treat.
