The premise of this latest offering from Spike Lee might sound like the plot of a porn movie but, fortunately, there is a lot more to it than that.
The film stars newcomer Anthony Mackie as Jack, an up-and-coming exec at a large pharmaceutical firm. When he stumbles on one of the company's big, bad secrets, he blows the whistle on them, rather than keep quiet as advised. Out of a job and penniless (the company having frozen his bank account), the desperate Jack is pleased to see his ex-fiancée, Fatima (Kerry Washington), reappear in his life. Not least because, having left him for another woman, she wants him to father the baby she and her girlfriend plan to have. Soon their friends are lining up around the block and, at $10,000 a pop, Jack is making some good money.
An attempt to explore everything from sexual politics to morality in the workplace, this, alas, isn't one of Lee's best films. his usual bite and passion missing. The first hour and a half is a reasonably decent flick, but then Lee throws in a Marlon Brando-like wannabe mobster (John Turturro), not to mention an unconvincing speech delivered by Jack - neither of which tie-in with the rest of the plot. Still, it's refreshing to see Lee embrace both humour and animation.
A film of two halves, in short, which doesn't add up to much.
