Shrek The Third is the first in this most popular of animated franchises to show signs of tiredness. Our ogre exhibits signs of contentment, slipping into a cosy middle-age, with even motor-mouth sidekick Donkey (Eddiie Murphy) no longer the funny, energetic firecracker he was before.
But when his dying father-in-law (John Cleese) informs him that a second heir exists – high-school kid, Arthur (Justin Timberlake) – Shrek grabs Donkey and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and resolves to drag the kid to the throne, no matter what it takes. Meanwhile Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) rallies dozens of storybook villains (Captain Hook, the Evil Queen etc) and persuades them to descend upon the Far Far Away kingdom.
Shrek is never boring, and the gags here are routinely funny in a way many comedies would give their eye teeth for. But there's a sense of plodding through the motions here, so while the kids will undoubtedly love it, older viewers may well find themselves checking their watches for the first time, and thinking maybe these animated ogres aren't such a laugh after all.
This DVD contains so many extras, they're almost longer than the film. For your money you get: Shrek's Guide to Parenthood; commentary; three lost scenes; music videos; multiple trailers; Big Green Goofs and several CD-Rom features.
