With Julien Temple's film about Joe Strummer about to hit the cinemas this seems the perfect time for the reissue of Alex Cox's biographical take on the sorry demise of the Sex Pistols and the literal death of their infamous bassist.
Embroiled in an affair with Nancy Spungen and an even deeper love for heroin, the lives of Sid Vicious and his American girlfriend spiral out of control when the band split. Set between London and New York Sid And Nancy plays loose with some of the facts, imagining the dreadful duo as a beautiful, but doomed love affair.
Gary Oldman plays the punk, Chloe Webb the groupie/prostitute who comes over to London at the height of punk. Vicious is depicted as thuggish but touchingly naive (their romance begins after he's trusted her with drug money, with which she scarpers) and although the film occasionally veers into a kind of Carry On Punking, it's tightly controlled and spiced with several magnificent scenes, chiefly Sid's meet-the-parents dinner.
This special edition includes some brilliant extras: Audio Commentary By Director Alex Cox; Love Kills - The Making Of Sid And Nancy; Extended Interview With Director Alex Cox; Theatrical Trailer; Photo Gallery.
