Originally titled Wonderful Day, this Korean anime-style epic is set in a typically apocalyptic future. 2142 is the year and human civilisation as we know it has been all but destroyed by war and pollution. Only the elite with power and technology have survived, taking refuge in a huge fish bowl of city called Ecoban which uses pollutants as its energy source.
Ecoban needs more pollutants to survive and its inhabitants plan to get them from the people of Marr. However, they haven't bargained for a young fella who wants only to rid the skies of clouds to show his lover the heavens above.
While Sky Blue is undoubtedly a visual treat and kinda intriguing for the first sci-fi-heavy half hour, its nonsensical plot begins to really let it down about half way through. There's obviously an ecological warning running throughout the film but its delivered with all the subtly of an animated David Bellamy coming onscreen to preach about recycling.
This combined with a love story of ridiculously soppy proportions will make Sky Blue too hard to swallow for the more cynical of you. While the 2D character animation set against vast 3D backgrounds aren't up to say Spirited Away's incredibly high standards, the rich visuals remain this movie's main selling point. Think Blade Runner meets Battle Of The Planets and you've got the style pinned down. Oh and don't forget to take your litter with as you're leaving the cinema.
