Set in the '40s, this groundbreaking, retro homage to the golden years of cinema takes CGI technology to the very limit.
Jude Law plays Sky Captain, an heroic fighter pilot whose talents are called upon when a horde of massive robots lay waste to Manhattan. By one of those pure coincidences the movies love so much, his mission runs parallel to an investigation his reporter ex-girlfriend, Polly Parker (Gwyneth Paltrow) is carrying out into missing scientists and soon the pair are heading off on an adventure to find the mysterious Dr Totenkopf.
Right from the start, the look of this glorious B-movie romp will blow you away. Sepia tints pervade every scene, creating a wonderfully comic book feel while the designs of everything from the robots to the sci-fi gadgets - of which there are plenty - make you feel like Flash Gordon will jump out any second and save the day.
While these are impressive in themselves, what is truly remarkable about Sky Captain is that, apart from the actors, everything we see is computer-generated. Shot against a blue screen, director Kerry Conran has sculptured a stunning world where anything (and, indeed, anyone!) is possible and he will make you believe.
