Picture the scene; a meteor falls swiftly through a night sky blazing a trail to the earth, its intergalactic A-Z plotting a course to the backwoods of the quiet town of Wheelsy.
Before you've had time to swallow your first mouthful of pick n mix, the cosmic rock cracks open, its cargo is spilt, and suddenly the town is awash with the kind of slimy creatures that you wouldn't want turning up at your door armed with a six pack and a smile.
Nathan Fillion (Serenity) stars as Bill Pardy; the police chief of Wheelsy, but it's left to Gregg Henry to steal the show as the foul mouthed, ineffectual Mayor Jack McReady, who spends his time wandering down Main Street, shouting obscenities.
Now Pardy has wasted too many years pining over childhood crush Starla (Elizabeth Banks), who's married to the town rich guy Grant Grant (Michael Rooker) who in turn finds himself to be the first guy to be introduced to the alien invasion. The situation goes from bad to Armageddon with most of the towns residents finding the slug chaps are taking over their innards. The cutesy lil slimesters then turn them into the kind of zombies you may well be familiar with - prefers flesh eating to flower arranging and replete with the kind of lurching walk generally to be found after a few snifters of the landlords finest.
Director James Gunn is a veteran of the Troma Studios and he wears his influences on his sleeve. Slither works as Gunn recognises the needs of his audience because ultimately, he is his audience, in the same way that Simon Pegg made Shawn of the Dead a success by making the film he wanted to go to the cinema to see.
Extras include commentary from director James Gunn, deleted scenes with optional commentary, extended scenes, gag reel, visual effects featurette, visual effects progressions, Making Of featurette, tour of the set, Who is Bill Pardy? Recipe For Blood featurette and more.
