Force fans quit yer moaning because George Lucas has finally relented (albeit reluctantly for a limited period) and given you the original Star Wars, as it was when you first saw it at the local ABC way back in 1977.

Yep, gone are those mind-numbing conversations between Luke and Biggs, Han Solo stepping on CGI Jabba's tail and new fangled droids floating about willy-nilly in the background in favour of good old fashioned masks and models.

Still the best of the lot, Episode IV (or simply Star Wars to me and you), is the tale of farm boy Luke Skywalker and his unlikely quest to save the galaxy from the evil clutches of the Empire and Darth Vader. Along the way he befriends a droid called R2-D2, human cyborg relations C3-PO and the 'walking carpet' that is Chewbacca. Aided by his Jedi mentor old Ben Kenobi, smuggler Han Solo and his would-be love interest Princess Leia (ugh, that's his sister!) cinema doesn't get much better than this.

This version of Star Wars comes as a two disc package, the first featuring the 1997 Special Edition replete with bonus effects scenes for younger fans, along with the original '77 theatrical release, for the parents. Both feature commentaries by George Lucas, Carrie Fisher and various special effects guys.

DVD Review

The force is with us once again, as George Lucas's cherished space soap becomes available with more new touches that will thrill fans. This set contains the remastered 1997 special editions of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi and includes new footage and special effects.

The new generation of Star Wars fans, who enjoyed the more recently made trilogy will certainly want these three classics to have the benefit of watching all six in their proper chronological order. So seeing Luke Skywalker continue his adventure from his home on Tattooine to his first encounters with Darth Vader, though his quest to become a Jedi master and final battle on the Death Star above Endor.

Of course, that's not to forget the film series' other equally-legendary characters: Han Solo, Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

As this is a reissue it does include a behind the scenes preview of Episode III The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Battlefront Xbox game preview, both of which, of course, all self respecting Star Wars fans will have seen/played, but the box set also packs quite a few extras in. Including: Empire Of Dreams: The Story Of The Star Wars Trilogy' documentary, The Birth Of The Lightsabre, The Characters Of Star Wars, The Force Is With Them: The Legacy Of Star Wars, 1977 Original and 1997 Special Edition re-release trailers and teaser trailers, 1977 Original and 1997 Special Edition re-release TV spots, Poster gallery, production artwork gallery, link to the Starwars.com website with exclusive DVD-Rom content.
