"You've been served, now it's on" said the kids in an episode of South Park as they mocked combative dance films.
In such urban flicks the moves are generally the most exciting aspect as predictability is par for the course. Stomp The Yard boasts spectacular 'steppin' scenes and great hip hop tunes, creating the thrills of music video and stretching them for the duration of a film.
Columbis Short plays DJ (it's his name, not his profession!) who's sent from LA to Atlanta following a family death. There he enrolls at university where his dancing skills are soon noticed. Rivalry emerges between two fraternities (both called Gamma something - any non-American who's seen Spike Lee's Schooldays will have an idea how silly all the frat stuff can get), and is manifested through dance. DJ develops a fierce rivalry with a extremely talented dancer named Grant and is mentored, Karate Kid-style, by frat leader Sylvester.
It all leads to a dancefloor battle between the two rivals and, of course, there's a bit of love interest thrown in and guess what? The object of his affection is the girlfriend of his nemesis.
Did we mention how cool the dance moves were?
