An expletive strewn, coming of age comedy from the team behind Knocked up and The 40 Year Old Virgin. If you were a fan of either of those then you know what to expect - filthy language, pop culture references, Seth Rogen and far too long a running time.
Michael Cera and Jonah Hill play two best friends in high school who are desperate to get laid. Hope lies in a house party where they believe if they score enough alcohol surely some girl would be drunk enough to sleep with either of them. Aided by the now legendary screen character McLovin, (played by newcomer Christopher Mintz-Passe) the film centres on their bid to buy alcohol.
It's patchy sure, but there are some wonderful comedic moments, most of them revolve around Cera's ability to take bumbling awkwardness to a new level. His attempt at singing to placate a gang of coked up frat boys is one of the film's highlights, as is his seduction technique. "You're the best. You're so...unique," he tells a girl who is about to go all the way with him. He finally realises he is not ready for it, but doesn't want to hurt her feelings.
It's these kind of moments that give the film some depth and warmth amidst all the puerile humour. The main characters may talk big but writers, Rogen and Evan Goldberg never let you forget they are still just a bunch of kids unsure about themselves.
Like Knocked Up, there are a bunch of inventive extras on the DVD including a series of surreal short films about the continuing adventures of the two policeman who turn up halfway through the film (Rogen and Bill Hader).
