DVD Review

Suspect Zero didn't get a theatrical release, possibly because its serial killer storyline was considered a little too '90s for the brave new Hollywood of franchises, remakes and comic-book adaptations. And though it's not breaking any boundaries, this is a very functional thriller, featuring impeccable performances from Aaron Eckhart as the cop chasing down Ben Kingsley's bad guy.

In time-honoured style Eckhart finds himself increasingly tormented by the killings, which begin with the discovery of a travelling salesman, his corpse carefully positioned exactly straddling the New Mexico-Arizona border.

Merhige was last seen directing Shadow Of The Vampire and certainly knows how to build the tension gradually. The notion that little separates the hunter and hunted is a something of an old cliché, and not entirely convincing, but for its knife-edge balance of action and suspense, Suspect Zero deserves the UK audience finally coming its way.
