In The Shaggy Dog, assistant district attorney Dave Douglas (Tim Allen) is bitten by a 300-year-old pooch stolen from Tibet by evil scientist Dr Kozak (Robert Downey Junior), which transforms him into a top dog (geddit?) investigator.
Cue comedy head scratching, bum-sniffing and cat-bothering as Dave (now a sheepdog or a human in the throws of canine behaviour) solves the animal crime with the help of some young animal rights protesters.
Meanwhile it takes Dave's incarnation as dog to give him perspective on his washed up family life and prompts him to salvage his ailing marriage to Kristin Davis.
The film is a remake of two Disney pictures - the 1959 comedy of the same name, in which a little boy captures some crooks after being turned into a dog and 1976's The Shaggy DA, wherein lawyer Dean Jones transforms himself into a dog and exposes municipal corruption.
What the film lacks in originality it makes up for in CGI effects. Deleted scenes, "bone tickling" bloopers and music video Woof There It Is, may also entertain those who enjoyed it at the cinema.
