Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce a live action TV series based on the best-selling videogame 'Halo'.

In a pioneering move from the movie legend, the show will premiere on the new Xbox console, Xbox One.

“The 'Halo' universe is an amazing opportunity to be at that intersection where technology and myth-making meet to produce something truly groundbreaking,” said Spielberg about the project.

A live-action incarnation of the sci-fi adventure game, featuring Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, has been kicked around the film industry for some years now.

Peter Jackson was at one time set to produce a movie version, with 'District 9' helmsman Neill Blomkamp in place to direct.

That project never made it, but it was later rumoured that Spielberg was to make the film through his Dreamworks studio.

Now he's set to executive produce the TV show for Microsoft, but as yet little else is known about the series.

Hopefully more news will emerge in the coming months.

The Xbox One will go on sale later this year.
