Long before he became a movie star Jack Black and his buddy Kyle Gass created the concept of Tenacious D, a rock duo who inject a large dollop of humour into their music.
This movie gives you the, somewhat mythical, backstory of the band. Directed by Liam Lynch, Tenacious D… opens with Black's JB escaping his Christian upbringing, embodied in the form of his father (Meat Loaf), and moving to Venice Beach to pursue his dreams of becoming a rock star. There, he meets Kyle Gass's KG and soon they realise they were destined to make music together.
In order to pay the rent, they enter an open mic competition and learn of a guitar pick with extraordinary powers - hence the title - that they seek to steal from a rock museum. Mayhem ensues with car chases, magic mushrooms and all sorts thrown in for good measure.
The charismatic Black is of course the show stealer with Glass working well more as the straight man in a rock film that bypasses any Spinal Tap-like satire for straight up laughs.
Don't expect the special features to be taken too seriously either. Fans will enjoy the film just as much, if not more, with the commentary from the stars and director Liam Lynch. It doesn't stop there either as you get deleted and extended scenes a making of Documentary, In the Studio featurette, making of the video featurette for the song The Pick of Destiny and the video itself plus a Jump To A Song jukebox feature.
