Dressed in a denim shirt, jeans and trainers, ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ star Tilda dozed for nearly eight hours inside the see-through installation at the New York museum.
‘The Maybe’, a collaboration with Turner Prize nominated artist Cornelia Parker, will be appearing on completely random days throughout the year.
“Staff don’t know she’s coming until the day of,” a museum source told Gothamist.com, “but she’s here today.”
It’s the second time 52-year-old Tilda has snoozed for art, as she appeared in an identical exhibit back in 1995 – sleeping in a box at London’s Serpentine Gallery.
Visitor Christine McKinney said: “I saw her and I thought ‘You’re an Oscar winner – what are you doing in a box?’”
“I knew it was her immediately,” said Helmut from New York.
However, fellow New Yorker Emma admitted: “I thought it was a dude.”
Swinton is famously arty for a Hollywood A-Lister. In 2008 she funded her own successful "glamour-free" film festival, 'The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams', in her Scotish Highland hometown, Nairn.
Then, in 2009, Tilda embarked on a "travelling film festival" project - hauling a 33.5 tonne cinema across the Highlands on the back of a truck. It was featured in the documentary 'Cinema Is Everywhere'.
The endearingly androgynous actress has previously collaborated with art-pop singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf on his album 'The Bachelor - and recently appeared in the surreal music video for David Bowie's 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)'.
