He described the situation as being 'tragicomic', splitting with Holmes, who he had been married to for five years and had a daughter, Suri.

On entertainment magazine show Taff, he said: “I didn't expect that. Life is a challenge. To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you.

“That's what life is... Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humour.”

Cruise added that he has had 'an incredible amount of time to reflect' following the split, from which Holmes was given custody of Suri.

The actor retains a solid fanbase in Germany, following his role as Claus Von Stauffenberg in Bryan Singer's 'Valkyrie', in which he player the Nazi officer who lead a plot to assassinate Hitler.

'Oblivion' is out in the UK today (April 10).
