Producer Jerry Bruckheimer says ‘Top Gun 2’ is still happening, despite the death of original director Tony Scott last year.

“For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop,” the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ producer told Deadline. “We still want to do it with Tom [Cruise] and Paramount are still interested in making it.”

Bruckheimer also confirmed that original star Tom Cruise, who played hot shot fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, was still up for a sequel – revealing: "What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick."

“It's something [Tom] is excited about, so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm, hopefully we'll get it made.”

Bruckheimer added that the death of Tony Scott last August did “put a pause on the project”.

Prior to the director’s death, Scott and Cruise had been scouting potential sequel shooting locations in Nevada, aiming for a 2014 release date. The script, penned by ‘The Town’ co-writer Peter Craig, would have reportedly focused on the role of drones in modern aerial warfare.

"This world fascinated me, because it's so different from what it was originally," Scott had told HitFix back in 2010. "But, I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie."

‘Top Gun’, released in 1986, shot Cruise to movie star status, and established Scott as an A-List action director.
