The two companies will assist the director in 'selection of filming sites within China, theatrical promotion and possible postproduction activities in China as well as casting of Chinese actors and actresses in the film'.

It is already set to be a key release in China.

The third instalment, 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon', made an extremely healthy $165 million (£109 million) in the territory when it was released in 2011.

It follows news that Marvel is to release a version of 'Iron Man 3' specially tailored for the Chinese market, featuring extended sequences filmed in Beijing.

The production also added an appearance from the country's leading actress Fan Bingbing, who is also appearing in the new 'X-Men' film, 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'.

It was rumoured last year that a portion of the production of 'Transformers 4' would take place in China.

Meanwhile, the Michigan Film Office - the remaining action will be shot in Detroit - recently announced early details of the sequel.

“As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon', Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet,” read the synopsis.

“However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs.

“The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.”

'Transformers 4', which is set to star Mark Wahlberg opposite Nicola Peltz, is due out on June 27, 2014.
