Jennifer Lawrence reveals shock at winning best supporting actress BAFTA

Jennifer Lawrence was so shocked on hearing that she’d won the BAFTA for best supporting actress, she responded with expletives.

The 23-year-old actress picked up the award for her role in American Hustle, surprisingly beating Lupita Nyong’o, who was nominated for her role in 12 Years a Slave.

Lawrence was unable to attend the ceremony due to filming commitments for X-Men: Days of Future Past, but said she was surprised to win.

She told Deadline: "Oh, it was a big surprise. I didn't remember that the BAFTAs were happening that day.

"I certainly did not think I was going to win one so I put it out of my mind. So there I was, in the middle of being painted blue, and someone said, 'You just won the BAFTA!' And I said, 'Oh, go f**k yourself!' And then it turned out they were serious."

American Hustle director David O. Russell collected the trophy on her behalf.

The actress, who will present an award at this year’s Academy Awards, admitted it was a relief to be away from the pressure of awards season, saying: "It has been a bit of a blessing to be away, and not really aware of what has been going on," she said. "It actually has been really nice."

She also laughed off the memory of tripping on stage when she collected her best actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook last year.

"It looked like I was drunk," she said. "I did learn, though, not to let the dress gather in the front when you walk up the stairs."
