A story concerning the relationship between a sleazy, terminally ill geriatric and a morose, unemployed, poorly educated teenager is unlikely to offer an enjoyable insight into the human character. According to this criterion, Venus does not fail. As has been noted by all the reviews I have seen the acting is excellent, the direction superb, but for me at least the enjoyment factor was non existent. The story is vaguely reminiscent of Death in Venice but without the wonderful soundtrack and scenery. Human frailties abound in both films. Many viewers of Venus will find that the suppressed and expressed sexual desires of a sick old man played against the manipulative behaviour of a self obsessed young woman results in a thought provoking cinematic experience. However you may, like me, wish that you had spent your time elsewhere.
