John Hurt and Richard Briers are among 1st class British acting talent who provide voices to this British animated favourite. Based on Richard Adams' classic animal saga, rabbits are granted a fighting chance of survival by the great furry one in the sky, Lord Frith.
One evening, in the heart of the English countryside, a group of rabbits emerge from their warren to feed. However, as the sun sinks behind a hill, one of their number, the psychic Fiver, has a terrifying vision of the warren's destruction at the hands of man.
Fiver, with his brother Hazel and a few friends flee the warren, in search of a "high lonely place" where they'll be safe. Enduring danger and adventure, they find the place of their dreams - until a new shadow falls upon them, a ruthless race of rabbits who'll stop at nothing to defend their supremacy.
A film to capture audiences all ages, Martin Rosen's acclaimed production constantly surprises and moves you, despite the animation being less than top drawer even by 1978 standards. Adams' touching story is perfectly complemented by a lilting, folky score, which includes Art Garfunkel's tearjerking chart-topper Bright Eyes.
