DVD Review

Based on a Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, West Side Story is widely considered one of the best movie musicals ever made. It's a claim that's backed by the 10 Academy Awards it won.

Directed by Robert Wise (The Sound of Music), the 1961 film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different ethnic backgrounds whose youth often clash violently on the streets. Both the romance and the fighting are set to ballads and highly charged song-and-dance numbers composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The colourful and moody along with Bernstein's Gerswhin-like jazz-tinged classical score make for an absorbing atmosphere.
