A melodrama, based on Billie Letts' weepy bestseller, set in America's Midwest and stars Natalie Portman (Leon) as a teenage mother who's struggling through life.
Novalee Nation (Portman) is 17-years-old, pregnant and on her way to California with her musician boyfriend when he dumps her in a car park in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. Although she's able to hide-out at a local store, the expectant teen manages to blow her cover by giving birth in a grocery aisle. With well-wishing locals taking the penniless Novalee under their wing, it isn't long before it seems as though her life is getting back on track and she's even caught the eye of the town's shy librarian. Then come a succession of twists - from tornados to kidnappers and a freight train accident - which can only be considered the world's worst run of bad luck. However, like every gutsy, wholesome, all-American girl, Novalee battles through - hooray!
Where The Heart Is manages to successfully mix genuine social issues with some light-hearted moments and emotional performances.
