The year is 1972 and journalist Karen O'Connor, played by Alison Lohman, decides to write a book about a couple of '50s variety show hosts, American Lanny Morris (Kevin Bacon) and his English sidekick, Vince Collins (Colin Firth).
The story is told dipping back and forth from the present time to the past; the past being an unsolved tragedy of a young girl found dead in the entertainer's hotel suite some 15 years ago. Determined to uncover what really happened, and write a blockbuster at the same time, Karen unravels events in a reasonably entertaining way although the film makers decision to go back and forth between the two decades is at times a little clumsy.
As the comedic, appallingly immoral entertainers who'll chase anything that moves in a skirt, Firth and Bacon are clearly much better than the material they had to work with. Their exceptional performances just about save this project from becoming a pedestrian Agatha Christie style TV murder mystery.
Extras include a Making Of featurette, deleted scenes and unedited b-roll footage.
