Waterworld remake planned?

US channel Syfy is interested in a potential 'reboot' of the 1995 film, according to reports

Kevin Costner's much-derided blockbuster 'Waterworld' could be set for a remake, according to reports.

Forbes says that the cable channel Syfy, which is owned by NBC Universal, is looking to acquire the rights to the 1995 film.

One of the reasons that it thinks a remake of the post-apocalyptic fantasy could do well is due to robust viewing figures when the film is replayed on its channel.

Either a film or a TV series, along the lines of what happened with sci-fi TV spin-off series 'Stargate', could now be on the cards after the channel's film arm, Syfy Films, revealed it is 'actively developing scripts'.

The original film was, at the time, the most expensive film ever made at $175 million (£109 million). 'Titanic' then topped the figure with $200 million (£125 million) two years later.

Though it's often cited as a flop, it did eventually turn a profit when it accounted for home video sales, though its US box office returns were poor.

It was also not as badly reviewed as many believe either. On reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes' 'Top Critics' section, the film scores a 75% 'fresh' rating, with an average 6.4 out of 10 score.
