'The Avengers' unite for Super Bowl trailer

Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. star in action-packed new super-hero spot

The Super Bowl remains one of the biggest events of the year for advertisers, as millions of people line up to watch the sports extravaganza. In the movie world, however, all eyes are on the trailers.

This year felt a little more cynical than usual, as studios released 10-second trailers for the 60-second trailers (seriously) in advance of the event, but a few blockbusters still grabbed our attention.

Top of the list was 'The Avengers', which, along with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, is the most anticipated comic book flick of the year.

The spot saw the titular collection of Marvel heroes assembled for the first time.

So that’s Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and (deep breath) Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk.

The money shot is the gang together in New York, preparing to face off against villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who was first seen in 'Thor'.

Director/writer Joss Whedon’s (hopefully) laser-sharp script shone as well in the extended vesrion. “I have an army,” says Tom Hiddleston’s villainous Loki atop a New York skyscraper, “We have a Hulk,” quips Tony Stark in reply before the first full shots of Hulk in action.

There was also a quick glimpse at Loki’s army, with many fans believing them to be the Frost Giants first seen in last year’s ‘Thor’. Loki is half-Frost Giant and in 2011’s Norse blockbuster it’s explained that they once tried to conquer Earth. Might they be trying again?

'The Avengers' is released on 4 May 2012.
