13 Horror Movies To Look Out For In 2015

As 2014 draws to a close, we take a look ahead at our most eagerly anticipated new horror movies set to hit screens in the new year. If you like scary movies, these should be on your radar…

The Woman In Black: Angel of Death

The sequel to Hammer’s hugely successful but somewhat controversial 2012 adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel. Picking up decades after the first film, ‘Angel of Death’ sees haunted mansion Eel Marsh used as a refuge for young evacuees during the Blitz, only to awaken an even greater threat than the German bombs. Out 1st January.

It Follows

Acclaimed at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and hotly tipped to be a breakthrough hit in 2015, writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s film follows a teenage girl (Maika Monroe) who gets the eerie feeling that someone, or something, is watching her. We don’t know much else, but we’re told there are surprises aplenty in store. Out 27th February.

Paranormal Activity: the Ghost Dimension

The supernatural found footage series continues as yet another household finds itself dealing with a haunting - but this time around the action may be that bit more in your face, as reports say it will be at least partially in 3D. Out 13 March.

Spring

The only film on this list that this writer has actually been fortunate enough to see just yet, this unorthodox supernatural romance from writer-director team Aaron Moorehead and Justin Benson sees a young American (Lou Taylor Pucci) find the love of his life (Nadia Hiler) whilst visiting Italy - but she has a rather big secret. On limited release 17 April.

Insidious Chapter 3

Having written the first two ‘Insidious’ films, Leigh Whannell makes his directorial debut on the third installment. He also reprises his role as one third of the paranormal investigation team, in what is said to be a prequel showing how psychic Elise (Lin Shaye) first got into the ghost-fighting business. Out 5 June.

Sinister 2

As original director Scott Derrickson takes on Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange,’ Ciaron Foy (director of underrated 2012 horror ‘Citadel’) takes over for this sequel which sees Shannyn Sossaman move her family into the house occupied by Ethan Hawke’s family in the original - though we suspect the earlier tenant, the demonic Bagul, may still be in residence. Out 21 August.

Victor Frankenstein

Daniel Radcliffe follows ‘The Woman in Black’ and ‘Horns’ with another unexpected horror role, playing the assistant Igor to James McAvoy’s title character in a new take on the horror classic, said to be told primarily from Igor’s perspective. Out 2 October.

Crimson Peak

Guillermo del Toro returns to the adult-oriented Gothic horror on which he made his name, only this time in an English language production on a Hollywood studio budget. Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam star in what the director promises to be a “ghost story and Gothic romance.” Out 16 October.

Friday the 13th Part 13 (No Official Title Yet)

Hard to believe it’s been over five years since we last saw hockey masked maniac Jason Voorhees swing his machete through the sinful young inhabitants of Crystal Lake. Reportedly not even in production yet, this long-awaited revival of the slasher series from director David Bruckner remains clouded in mystery, but if they keep to schedule it’s due 13 November (yes, a Friday).

Krampus

We might not yet have the promised sequel to Halloween favourite ‘Trick ‘R Treat’ (pictured), but writer-director Michael Dougherty is back at work applying his spooky sensibilities to another holiday legend: the shadowy counterpart to Santa Claus who deals out punishment to the naughty children. Out 27 November.

Amityville: the Awakening

The long-running haunted house series is revived once again, but this time there’s particular cause for optimism thanks to the presence of director Franck Khalfoun, responsible for arguably the best horror remake of recent years in 2012’s ‘Maniac.’ Originally set for a January release, the film was pulled to allow time for reshoots: its release date is unconfirmed at present.

Somnia

Hot on the heels of one of 2014’s best new horror releases ‘Oculus’ (pictured), director Mike Flanagan has wasted no time getting back in the saddle with what promises to be another atmospheric chiller, this time about a child whose nightmares come to life. Kate Bosworth and Tom Jane star, but though the film is reportedly set for a March release in Italy, we don’t know about its UK release yet.

The Hallow

This UK production, the directorial debut of Corin Hardy, immediately became of wide interest when Hardy landed the job of directing the upcoming reboot of ‘The Crow’ (at the recommendation of Edgar Wright, no less). Centring on a family under attack from demonic beings in the woods beside their home, ‘The Hallow’ is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January; beyond that, no release details are currently known.
