Netflix has finally dropped the first trailer for the third season of its controversial teen drama series 13 Reasons Why – and it has come with the news of a major character death in the new season.

It's been more than a year since the show was renewed for more episodes and details about what we could expect were few and far between (beyond a few casting details here and there).

But it looks like all that secrecy was for very good reason, as season 3 will focus on an all-new mystery when the students of Liberty High are rocked by the death of Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) – and everyone's a suspect.

Viewers will remember that Bryce raped Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe) and Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), as well as his girlfriend Chloe Rice. The show's second season largely focused on the sexual assault trial against Bryce, and while many expected to see him pay for his crimes when Jessica spoke to the police, the character got off shockingly lightly as he only received three months' probation.

But now it looks like someone could have taken the law into their own hands, with 13 Reasons Why's new trailer teasing that the students are "connected by their secrets" as it builds up to a scene from Bryce's funeral.

"The truth is, given the right circumstances, the right motivation," the trailer says. "Anyone could have done this."

Who killed Bryce Walker? We'll find out when the third season drops on August 23.

Along with a trailer, we've also been given an official synopsis for the show's third season, which reads a little something like this:

"Eight months after preventing Tyler from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach find ways to shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move toward recovery.

"But when the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of a football player, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it's up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone's deepest secrets.

"The stakes are raised in this riveting third season of 13 Reasons Why, as the consequences of even the most well-intended actions can alter a life forever."

13 Reasons Why returns to Netflix on August 23.
