A sprawling hexagonal castle where King Henry VIII once lived has just gone on the market in Kent for an eye-watering £15 million.

Chilham Castle, which was originally a fortress built in 709 AD by Wihtred King of Kent, certainly has some stories to tell. As well as being home to the former King of England in 1539, the castle has been inhabited and owned by several others including Saint Louis King of France, King Edward I and King Edward II.

Impeccably decked out, the interiors are fit for an aristocrat. You'll find a sweeping staircase, clashing prints, eye-catching wallpaper in every room, grand chaise loungers, warm colours, plush furniture, and a generous scattering of art and antiques. With an illustrious history and utterly grand interiors, it certainly is a place of genuine enchantment.

Only 10 families have lived at Chilham Castle since 1616, with the most current owners restoring the home to its former glory (it has been approved by the English Heritage). Inside, there are 16 bedrooms, 11-12 bathrooms, 11 reception rooms, a library, study, kitchen, further family areas, and, our favourite spot, the 1920s marble indoor swimming pool. Countryside living really doesn't get much more divine than this.

A significant feature at Chilham is the stunning garden. New owners will need to consider the help of a gardener, as the whole area spreads across 300.36 acres. There are wonderful terraced lawns to wander through, herbaceous borders, topiary to the south of the house, and a Taittinger planted vineyard.

'Chilham Castle is one of the best houses to have come to the market for decades, and undoubtedly one of the best houses I've seen in my time,' says Will Matthews, Partner, Knight Frank Farms & Estates.

'The Jacobean property offers the unique opportunity to acquire a piece of English history. And despite its impressive historical credentials, the property recently underwent a full restoration and is in remarkable condition.'

Chilham Castle is currently on the market for £15,000,000 with Knight Frank.
