It’s totally fine to be low key with your Met Gala appearances and wear whatever makes you feel comfortable, but with that being said, it’s always exciting to see when invitees to this prestigious benefit instead try to raise the bar as high as possible. Here are some of the most extravagant and over-the-top looks that we saw at the 2023 Met Gala, which had the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
The businesswoman and executive director of the Serum Institute of India looked stunning in a mirrored Schiaparelli with a unique spiked design. Is it subtle? Not at all. But is it beautiful? Totally!
Skies are blue, grass is green, and Rihanna has great Met Gala looks. Even if we’re always expecting it, the singer continues to wow us, and didn’t disappoint in 2023 with this long white Valentino gown under a puffy hooded top styled like large white camellias, a design staple of Chanel. She also brought the top down around her shoulders to reveal a form-fitting bodice of the gown.
The South Korean supermodel had a ton of visual homages to the late designer Lagerfeld and his legacy as director of classic fashion houses with her tweed combination suit-and-gown accented with camellia flowers, gold chains and lots of ruffles.
Janelle Monae pulled off a stellar outfit reveal when she arrived in an oversized black-and-white tweed suit which was removed to show a sheer black tulle dress over a sequined bikini, plus some bold white boots.
The actor took his tribute to Lagerfeld to a whole new level with this dramatic 30-foot chiffon cape that featured a massive hand-drawn portrait of the late designer.
Maya Hawke strutted at the Met with a long feathered Prada coat over a matching minidress. An oversized collar on the coat also added a fascinating dimension to this look.
Badu always brings her own unique style into all of her looks, and did no different here with her all-white ensemble complemented by a white wig covering her face almost entirely and tons of jewelry.
Once again, Karen Elson's Christian Siriano gown used Lagerfeld's love of florals to stunning effect.
Lil Nas X
Just because he didn't wear much doesn't mean the rapper wasn't doing something extreme. Lil Nas X was one of many celebs inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's cat Choupette, but he decided to do a bedazzled cat look with the help of makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Doja Cat wouldn't settle with just wearing a gorgeous custom Oscar de la Renta gown for the gala, she also made use of prosthetics designed by Malina Stearns to complete the look.
Close's long silver gown was extravagant, yet still chic and sophisticated.
Ora wore a sheer black gown that featured a super-long sheer train. If Jeremy Pope hadn't shown up that night, Ora would have been the running for Longest Look, but alas, maybe next year.
Brian Tyree Henry
Henry stunned in a Lagerfeld ensemble that included a flowing laced cape, a silk vest, and beaded necklaces. Don't be afraid to rock a cape sometimes, guys, it works!
Yung Miami & Sean "Diddy" Combs
The rappers showed up to the gala together and posed with elaborate ensembles. Diddy's all-black outfit came from his own clothing line, Sean John, featuring a rose-studded cape (see, all the dudes love capes!) over a studded jacket and trousers.
Yung Miami wore a gorgeous dress designed by Luca Lin of Act N°1, which featured a standing tulle bust and sheer train.
Ortega's Thom Browne-designed outfit was a unique pairing of his style with Lagerfeld's influences which came in the form of the gold chains and textures incorporated like the ruffles and a tweed bolero jacket over her corset top.
Pugh, pictured here with Valentino's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, revealed a shaved head as part of her bold Met Gala look, which included a strapless white gown and this tall feathered headpiece.
Anok Yai's Prabal Gurung dress took sequins to a whole new level as both silver and gold sequins formed a bodice that arched at the hips, and also dotted her long train. She also completed the look with a cool small brown veil over her eyes.
Amy Fine Collins
Fashion writer Amy Fine Collins in a stunning Thom Browne ensemble. She apparently answered "Yes," when asked how much tweed she wanted in this outfit, and it truly works here. She also earns a thousand bonus points for the dog-shaped purse alone.
Don't worry, we got to the cat suit. Living up to his mission of consistently confusing fans and journalists, Leto showed up completely masked in a bulky cat costume inspired by Choupette, but he eventually got rid of the suit for a sheer blouse.
The supermodel looked ravishing in a vintage Chanel gown under a feathered frock that she swung around on the steps.
