From being a breakfast staple to a holiday decoration, to a necessary ingredient in so many baked goods, eggs are so prevalent in our daily lives that it's important to know whether or not you're paying a reasonable amount per carton.

We consulted Numbeo for data and compiled a list that shows the cost for a dozen eggs in 10 major U.S. cities.

Surprisingly, New York isn't the most expensive, and between the first and second cheapest cities to buy a carton, the difference in price was nearly an entire dollar.

Most of the cities tended to have an average price within $2-3 per dozen, the average cost per dozen between these 10 cities being $2.96.
