A suspect who fled the UK following the death of a man in a road rage incident has been tracked down and arrested.

Abdulahi Shire, 24, left the country after Zakir Nawaz, 21, was killed on a Birmingham street on 10 September, 2016.

Warsame Mohamed, 23, was caught on CCTV helping to kick and stamp on Mr Nawaz following a “minor road prang”.

Shire, who was in the car with Mohamed, then allegedly fatally stabbed Mr Nawaz in the chest after the accident in Highfield Road in Washwood Heath.

Mr Nawaz, who had become a father for the second time 10 days before the attack, died at the scene while Mohamed and Shire drove off.

Mohamed fled to Holland but sneaked back into the UK and was arrested after police spotted him walking on the M40 in High Wycombe on 29 January, 2017.

The Somali national was jailed for seven years after he admitted manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court.

A third man, Waseem Raja Azram, 29, was jailed for two years for violent disorder relating to Mr Nawaz’s killing.

West Midlands Police and Europol issued an international arrest warrant for Shire, who is originally from Holland.

He was finally arrested in Norway earlier this month.

A police spokesperson said: “Abdulahi Shire was sought over the fatal stabbing of Zakir Nawaz in Highfield Road, Washwood Heath, on 10 September, 2016.

“A European Arrest Warrant was issued shortly after the killing – which had been sparked by a minor road rage collision – and our detectives were working with Europol in a bid to locate Shire.”

Shire, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder and is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.
