Adam McKay Doesn't Know If He's Writing Ant-Man & The Wasp

Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ has to be one of the great Cinderella stories of 2015 at the movies. Infamously hit by major behind the scenes drama when original director Edgar Wright walked over creative differences with the studio, many were ready to write the film off before it even arrived.

Happily, the film from eleventh-hour replacement director Peyton Reed proved far better than many had anticipated - and, while not an ‘Avengers’-size hit, its global box office haul ($517 million and counting) was handsome enough to greenlight a sequel.

However, whilst Reed looks certain to return to call the shots on ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp,’ there remains a question mark over another key saviour of ‘Ant-Man’ - Adam McKay, who co-wrote the final draft of the screenplay (originally by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish) with leading man Paul Rudd.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer-director (best known for the ‘Anchorman’ movies) says he doesn’t yet know if he’ll be back for the second installment in the miniature Marvel series - but he seems interested.

“I was talking to [Paul] Rudd about it the other day. We’ll see what happens, but that would certainly be fun. I loved working with Marvel.“

McKay had been initially courted by Marvel to replace Wright as director on ‘Ant-Man’ - and though he declined this offer, he is hotly tipped to get behind the camera on another future Marvel movie, with 2019′s ‘Inhumans’ frequently cited as a likely directorial project.

‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ is confirmed to again star Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, who will inherit the mantle of The Wasp in the sequel - becoming the first female superhero to get her name in the title of a Marvel Studios movie (note we said Marvel Studios: 20th Century Fox’s 2004 ‘Elektra’ movie doesn’t count).

‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ is due 6 July 2018. Meanwhile, Adam McKay’s next movie, the uncharacteristically serious (and awards-tipped) financial crisis drama ‘The Big Short,’ hits UK cinemas 22 January 2016.
