Aidan Turner On James Bond Rumours: “I’d Rather Not Say Anything”

Alleged 007 hopeful Aidan Turner seems wary of commenting on his chances of following Daniel Craig into the prestigious tuxedo.

The 33-year old Irish actor, who won legions of admirers for his role in BBC drama ‘Poldark’ (which has a new series on the way), is clearly aware of the buzz around him to be the next James Bond, but doesn’t want to say too much on the subject.

Touching on the matter very briefly to The Mirror, Turner remarks, “I’d rather not say anything.

“It seems like it’s the Judas kiss – once you comment on it, it disappears. It’s hugely coveted. Let’s see how it goes.”

An understandably diplomatic response – but Turner isn’t saying he wouldn’t be interested in the role. And well he might, as he’s now among the favourites to take over from Craig, along with Tom Hiddleston, James Norton and Idris Elba.

Still, it should again be noted that Craig has not officially abdicated the role of Bond just yet, and it’s still possible he could return for the 25th film in the series, tentatively expected in 2018.

Turner was already fairly well known for his roles in TV’s ‘Being Human’ and Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, but it was ‘Poldark’ that really made his name – thanks in no small part to a much-celebrated shirtless scene.

Turner tells The Mirror that going bare-chested was his idea, and says that he has regrets about it (though we’re not entirely sure we believe him):

“It was my idea to take my top off…It was probably a huge mistake. But Poldark’s out in the fields, it’s a really hot day, there’s a lot of work and it wouldn’t have made sense with a top on.

“It was never supposed to be sexually provocative. So when the show came out and it all kicked off, I was a bit surprised. But it kind of put the show on the map.”

And put Turner on the radar of Bond’s producers too, no doubt…

The new series of ‘Poldark’ starts 4 September on BBC1.
