Alamo Drafthouse Gets ‘Area 51,’ ‘Drunk Wedding'; Ricki Lake-Backed Docu Goes To Bond/360 – Film Roundup

Two Paramount Insurge films, Area 51 and Drunk Wedding, will get exclusive one-weekend runs at 16 Alamo Drafthouse theaters around the country in May alongside day-and-date releases on VOD and digital platforms. Area 51, a found-footage horror film, debuts May 15. It was co-written and directed by Oren Peli, and stars Reid Warner, Jamel King, Ben Rovner and Jelena Nik. Producers are microbudget horror meister Jason Blum and Steve Schneider. Drunk Wedding will run beginning May 22. The comedy about friends crashing a destination wedding is directed and co-written by Nick Weiss. It stars Christian Cooke, Victoria Gold, Dan Gill and Anne Gregory, among others. Producers are Brad Weston, Couper Samuelson and John Hamburg.

The Mama Sherpas, a documentary about birthing practices and executive produced by Ricki Lake, has been acquired by Bond/360. It will premiere May 27 in Los Angeles, followed by a rollout on regional, VOD and digital platforms. Brigid Maher directed the doc, which also looks at changing perceptions about birth practices, including the rise in caesarean sections. Other executive producers are Abby Epstein and Laila Rossi. Epstein and Lake produced the 2008 doc The Business of Being Born, among other docs around birthing and babies. They said Maher’s project updates the ongoing controversies over c-sections and other U.S. medical practices around birth.
