But after filming ‘The Deathly Hallows: Part Two’ - the final movie in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise – it was Alan Rickman himself who penned some rather touching parting words. And today, they seem all the more bittersweet.

The rather touching letter was penned by Alan Rickman for Empire Magazine back in 2011, just after finishing his final session as ‘Harry Potter’ legend, Professor Severus Snape.

And it reads as follows:

“'I have just returned from the dubbing studio where I spoke into a microphone as Severus Snape for absolutely the last time. On the screen were some flashback shots of Daniel, Emma, and Rupert from ten years ago. They were 12. I have also recently returned from New York, and while I was there, I saw Daniel singing and dancing (brilliantly) on Broadway. A lifetime seems to have passed in minutes.”

“Three children have become adults since a phone call with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume, and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but delicate narrative in the surest of hands.”

“It is an ancient need to be told in stories. But the story needs a great storyteller. Thanks for all of it, Jo.”

Of course, ‘The Deathly Hallows: Part Two’ was the film in which Professor Severus Snape redeemed himself – to both Harry Potter as well as the legion of fans who thought he was one of the bad guys… only to find out that all his malicious actions were with the best intent.

It turned out that Professor Snape – on the face of it, a villainous character who had aligned himself with the evil Voldemort – had been secretly helping Potter throughout his encounters with the Dark Lord.

Working closely with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint throughout the ‘Harry potter’ series, it seems like a poignant note in light of Radcliffe’s own tribute to the late, great Alan Rickman.

Alan Rickman died 14 January at the age of 69.
