Fantasy adventure novel The Alchemist is being adapted into a film, with Enola Holmes writer Jack Thorne set to pen the script.

The book, which was written by Portuguese author Paulo Coelho in 1988, before being released in English in 1993, follows a young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago as he goes on a quest to find treasure in Egypt, after he experiences recurring dreams about the pyramids there.

As reported by Variety, rights to the film have been acquired by Legendary Entertainment - with Jack Thorne attached to write the movie's script.

Thorne, who has won an Olivier and a Tony Award, as well as five BAFTAs, has previously written a flurry of successful projects.

These include stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, film Wonder and the Millie Bobby Brown-fronted mystery comedy Enola Holmes, and its sequel, Enola Holmes 2.

He is also known for his TV adaptation of Phillip Pullman's fantasy novels, His Dark Materials, which aired on BBC One and starred James McAvoy.

The official synopsis for The Alchemist describes the book as following "a young man who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found.

"The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams."

Multiple studios and actors have attempted to adapt The Alchemist in the past, including Laurence Fishburne and Idris Elba and, most recently, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's Westbrook Studios was attached to the project (via Variety).

Although the book became a widely translated international bestseller following its release, none of these projects to bring it to screen have so far transpired.

Legendary Entertainment will develop the new film, alongside Sony's TriStar Pictures and Palmstar.

No one is currently attached to direct or star in the adaptation.
