Alec Baldwin’s daughter has hit back after a US commentator said her father’s involvement in a fatal shooting on a film set was “poetic justice” for labelling Donald Trump an “evil murderer”.

Candace Owens, a right-wing political pundit, provoked a furious response after baselessly claiming that the famous actor had “murdered innocent people”.

Halyna Hutchins, 42, died last Thursday after being injured while filming the Western movie Rust after Mr Baldwin shot the firearm. He has since said his “heart is broken” since the tragedy.

In a now-deleted Twitter post, Ms Owens said that Mr Baldwin had spent “four years dedicated to painting Donald Trump and his supporters as evil murderers”, referring to Mr Baldwin’s portrayal of the former president on comedy show Saturday Night Live.

She added: “What has happened to Alec would be an example of poetic justice if it weren’t for the actual innocent people that were murdered by him.

“Pray for their families. So sad.”

Responding to the tweet on Tuesday, Ireland Baldwin wrote on Instagram: “You are the most disgusting, hateful, cancerous human being I’ve ever come across.

“Regardless of your foul opinions most of the time, the fact that you would disrespect the life of a woman who was accidentally and tragically killed...Shame on you.”

She added: “Be a Republican. Be unvaccinated. I don’t give a f**k. There are plenty of liberal ones that I support as well... But one f***ing thing I find myself doing is being RESPECTFUL.”

Ms Owens deleted the post following a furious backlash, and later wrote: “Will correct that last tweet to say Alec Baldwin *killed* someone- not murdered someone, as murder carries a different legal definition.

“Literally not one single thing that Alec Baldwin has said about Donald Trump and his supporters is going to age well.”

Her posts drew a furious response on social media, with one Twitter user writing: “Halyna Hutchins death should not be weaponised”.

Ms Owens is well-known for stoking controversy on social media, and claimed last week that the United States should “invade Australia” to free its citizens from a “tyrannical police state”, in reference to the country’s Covid restrictions.

Donald Trump Jr also drew criticism for posting a series of memes targeting Alec Baldwin. The former president’s son shared photos of T-shirts with the words: “Guns don’t kill people, Alec Baldwin kills people.”
