You only had to look at the upsetting amount of money that 'Rock of Ages' lost at the box office to know that the movie adaptation of the jukebox musical was roundly unloved.

But it appears that it was equally unloved within its ranks too.

Alec Baldwin has come forward to admit that it was indeed 'a horrible film'.

Baldwin played long-haired club owner Dennis Dupree in the movie, alongside Tom Cruise, but even an impressive wig couldn't cheer him up.

Speaking during an interview with New Yorker editor-in-chief David Remnick at the American Magazine Conference, he revealed that by the time he was on set, it was far too late.

“It was a complete disaster,” he said. “A week in you go, ‘Oh God, what have I done'.”

He added that he was only swayed towards the project in the first place because he liked director Adam Shankman and wanted to work with Tom Cruise and Russell Brand, who also starred in the film.

Baldwin claims he could tell the film was a turkey when 'the plane is buffeting, the engine is on fire'.

The film, released last year, cost $75 million to make – outside of often towering marketing and advertising budgets – but only made back $59 million.

The reviews too were largely unkind.

Some enjoyed it despite its shortcomings, Peter Travers in Rolling Stone writing that 'Rock of Ages is pretty fun despite a terrible script, bland leads and awful wigs, mainly thanks to a performance by Tom Cruise as fictional hair metal rocker Stacee Jaxx'.
